Physicals Q & A

What are physicals?

Physicals are checkups Dr. Kubal carries out to assess your state of health and pick up any indications of health problems before they start causing symptoms.

By undergoing a regular physical, you can be confident that you’re protecting your health and preventing the development of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

You may need a physical for other reasons, too, for example, if you’re taking up a new sport or starting a new job.

What happens during a physical?

Dr. Kubal begins your physical by reviewing your medical history and talking to you about how you feel. You can mention any odd symptoms or concerns you have about your health and tell Dr. Kubal about any challenges you’re facing, such as being under stress at work.

After the initial discussion phase, Dr. Kubal carries out a physical exam and measures your vital signs, including heart rate, breathing rate, temperature, and blood pressure. He looks at your skin, nails, and hair, which are often good indicators of health problems, and checks your external features like eyes, nose, and ears.

Dr. Kubal looks at your physical reflexes and reaction times, how well you can balance, and how sharply your mind responds, and then feels certain parts of your body to check for signs of disease. He can tell a great deal about the health of certain organs and bodily functions by feeling and testing them manually, including:

  • Lymph nodes
  • Thyroid gland
  • Carotid arteries
  • Liver
  • Joints

After your physical exam is complete, Dr. Kubal orders blood and urine tests to check for signs of infection and to measure your cholesterol and blood sugar levels. He may also ask for other diagnostic tests such as X-rays or ultrasound if he needs more detailed information.

Do men and women undergo the same physical?

Men and women undergo the same processes for the main part of the physical and diagnostic testing. Men also need to have their penis, testicles, and prostate gland examined, while women need an internal vaginal exam and a breast check.

Women can have their Pap smear done during the vaginal exam if it’s due and a test for HPV, or human papillomavirus. These tests are essential for preventing and detecting cervical cancer.

If you’re due for a physical, don’t put it off because it could save your life. Call Kubal Family Medicine today to schedule your physical, or book an appointment online.
