Hypertension Q & A

What is hypertension?

Hypertension is a condition in which your blood is pumping through your arteries under too high a pressure, hence hypertension commonly being referred to as high blood pressure.

The problem with hypertension is that the excessive force at which the blood is pumping damages the arteries and can lead to serious health problems and medical emergencies, including:

  • Heart disease
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Dementia
  • Kidney failure
  • Lost or reduced vision
  • Sexual dysfunction

The most worrying aspect of hypertension is that it causes no symptoms until the damage to the arteries is severe, which means you could have very high blood pressure and have no idea until, for example, you have a heart attack or start losing your sight. Having regular blood pressure checks is essential to prevent hypertension becoming so severe it threatens your life.

How is my blood pressure measured?

Fortunately, measuring your blood pressure is a quick and easy process. Dr. Kubal puts an inflatable cuff around your arm and fills it with air to a specific point before releasing it again, which takes only a couple of minutes. He measures your heart rate as it beats (systolic pressure) and between beats (diastolic pressure).

The two readings together tell Dr. Kubal if there’s any cause for concern. A healthy systolic reading measures 120 or below, and a healthy diastolic reading is 80 or below. Above these measurements, there’s a scale of severity:

  • Raised blood pressure: between 121 and 140 systolic or 81 and 90 diastolic
  • High blood pressure: over 140 systolic or over 90 diastolic
  • Dangerously high blood pressure: over 160 systolic or 100 diastolic

The higher your blood pressure, the more chance you have of experiencing the serious consequences of hypertension.

How is high blood pressure treated?

The good news is that because hypertension has such a close link to lifestyle, you can take action to reduce blood pressure if it rises to an unhealthy level. Making changes not only lowers your blood pressure, but it also improves your health in many other ways. Changes to make include:

  • Losing excess weight
  • Quitting smoking
  • Exercising regularly
  • Reducing salt intake
  • Reducing alcohol intake
  • Reducing saturated fat intake
  • Tackling stress
  • Eating more fruits and vegetables

Dr. Kubal can prescribe blood pressure medication as well if you require it, but you may not need to stay on medication if you make these changes to a healthier lifestyle.
